By now, you’ve probably heard about Dish Network’s new pay-TV service, unveiled at the this year’s CES. Dubbed “Sling TV,” they advertise as a $20/month a la carte service where you can bundle TV networks from Disney (ESPN, ESPN2, Disney Channel and ABC Family), Turner (Cartoon Network, CNN, TBS, TNT and Adult Swim) and Scripps (Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel). We’re here to explain why it’s not enough.
1. Not every game all the time
Let’s face it, folks. One of the main reason we invest in DIRECTV with KR Communications is its NFL Sunday Ticket, which promises every game — not just ESPN. Sure, Sling can give you ESPN and ESPN2, but true sports fans need every game, including those broadcast at home.
2. Fewer channels Where’s Showtime or AMC or Cinemax or FX or Comedy Central or HBO? DIRECTV gives us what you want to watch, wherever you want to go. Let’s face it, you can’t live without finding what happens on “Game of Thrones” or “Fargo.”
3. One stream
Don’t you hate it when your parents or siblings or kids or friends are streaming Netflix when you’re want to binge-watch “House of Cards.” Sling TV exists on the same one stream model. DIRECTV doesn’t. DIRECTV’s Genie gives you a multi-room DVR function so not only can you stream multiple shows at the same time, but also you can also DVR multiple shows at the same time. That means your husband can watch the game while you’re kids are watching Nick Teen. Or you can go out to dinner and catch up on your favorite shows later.
4. No DVR We know you’re busy. Which is why you need DVR. DIRECTV’s Genie allows you to record a whole season of “American Horror Show” and “True Detective.” But it’s more than that. The Genie is the most advanced HD DVR ever, allowing you to record 5 shows at the same time.
5. Not a lot of savings Sling TV’s $20/month fee seems like a bargain, but add it all up; you’re missing sports & entertainment networks & DVR. But for a limited time, switch to DIRECTV and you can spend the same amount every month and get a whole lot more.
